He had spent too many years stuffing himself into the narrow shape the world expected of him — the quiet man with neutral clothes, soft manners, and no sharp edges. But something had shifted. Today was the tipping point. His heart beat faster with the excitement and fear that always comes with a first step. He whispered aloud, just to hear it, “I’m not going back to being plain ol’ Stanley again.”
He walked to his mirror, the one he usually avoided, and looked himself in the eyes. This time, he didn’t just see what his old self was: the tousled brown hair, the pale skin, the tired posture. He saw someone new. Someone brighter. Curvier. Maybe a little more dramatic, maybe loud, someone fabulous.
